For their November social, the Sol Byer Lodge presents Olaf T. Engvig, author, maritime historian, lecturer, coastal skipper, ship restorer and preserver. Originally from Rissa, Norway (outside of Trondheim), Engvig resides with his family in California. He holds a graduate degree in Maritime history from the University of Oslo and is the recipient of numerous awards including Saint Olaf's Medal from King Olav V and the Gold Medal of Merit from King Harald V for his work saving and restoring historic vessels. The Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation awarded him the 2015 Outstanding Scandinavian American Award.

Among Engvig's many books are:

  • Viking to Victorian: Exploring the Use of Iron in Ship Building
    • Details how wrought iron was used in Norwegian Viking ships, as well as ships built from iron.
  • The Ships That Built the West:  The Scandinavian Navy, WAPAMA and VÆRDALEN
    • The main focus of Engvig's presentation; he will share interesting stories and unique pictures.
    • The  "Scandinavian Navy" refers to ships and/or seamen from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in the 1880-1945 time period. The US West Coast was built with the help of these ships and men. Many books are published on the immigrants to the Prairie. This book is the first to detail the story of the many Scandinavian seamen who contributed greatly. The Ships that Built the West also shares the stories of related ships, such as the steam schooner WAPAMA, once the main vessel on display in San Francisco, and the restoration of the hybrid ship VÆRDALEN, now sole survivor representing 300+ Scandinavian lumber carriers.
